Why Walking Is the Most Effective Form of Exercise
Yes, you read that right. Let me explain…
Your first thought about walking might be that it isn’t very effective because it doesn't burn a ton of calories, and it does not raise your heart rate.
But see, this is the problem. You are thinking short-term, not long-term.
Walking is the best form of activity because it is so easy to keep consistent.
Which one can you stick to more likely? A half an hour run in the morning every day without fail. Or 10,000 steps a day?
See, the beauty of tracking your steps and sticking to walking a certain amount of per day, is that you can break it down to multiple walks a day, you can do it anywhere, without having to schedule a certain amount of time for it, factoring in the change of workout clothes and shivering.
You could just park a bit further than normal, go to the coffee shop that is not the nearest, take the stairs, go to the bathroom that is on the other side of the building.
The health benefits are actually greater this way, because you break the sedentary time. A half an hour run in the morning or evening does not undo the harm of 8 hours of sitting. But you can radically reduce the harm of sitting by standing up and walking in between.
Steps are also easy to track, you can easily take a phone call or check some work messages while doing so, and as you walk outdoors you also get vitamin D, set your circadian rhythm, get fresh air, and even improve digestion after meals.
Humans are meant to move and walk a lot per day.
The first step therefore, is to increase your steps (pun intended).
