Weight Loss Drugs: Good or Bad?
There starts to be a long list of drugs people take for the purpose of weight loss. Some take them solely for weight loss, some also for treatment of diseases like diabetes. The list includes drugs like Phentermine, Orlistat, Semaglutide (AKA Ozempic), and Mounjaro.
My take on them is purely from the perspective of a weight loss coach. I cannot prescribe you a drug or tell you to stop taking one, as I am not a doctor. But I will give my thoughts on what is still missing when taking these drugs. I am not shaming you for taking one, for “cheating your way to weight loss”, but I do have a few considerations and concerns.
That is, even if successful weight loss can be accomplished with medications, and even if the weight stays off, we are missing the benefits of what a regular weight loss process would look like. Like adding exercise. Exercise has a bunch of benefits outside of weight loss - more energy, better mood (endorphins), longevity, sustaining muscle tissue when aging, improving cardiovascular health, etc.
A balanced diet normally needed to lose weight is also missing. This similarly affects your energy levels, mood, well being, libido, etc.
Good sleep is also needed to lose weight. This improves your well being and energy levels significantly.
Other lifestyle changes that are normally undertaken when having to lose weight also contribute to all of this.
Think about it like this. If you want to do a marathon, you won’t take a taxi to the end destination. The purpose of the marathon is to improve and challenge yourself both physically and mentally.
This being said, if you had to choose between staying overweight or losing weight with a drug, you might end up healthier still with the medication, as carrying excess weight is so problematic for health and longevity.
But ensure you make this decision carefully as there are some very negative side effects with many of the weight loss drugs.
Again, this is a decision you will make with your doctor. Just my 2 cents.
