You Are Stressed
Stress increases levels of the hormone cortisol in your body, which has been linked to greater fat gain, specifically in the mid section. This is due to the lowered energy expenditure resulting from the thyroid working less efficiently, thus slowing down the metabolism. You might lose muscle tissue as a result of these higher cortisol levels, thus further lowering your energy expenditure as muscle is more energy-expensive tissue than body fat. When you are stressed you often don’t have the energy or feeling to exercise. Instead, you might have stronger cravings to eat energy dense foods, thus also increasing your energy intake.
You Sleep Too Little
Sleeping affects fat loss similarly as stress does. In fact, sleeping too little increases your cortisol levels. You lose muscle tissue, burn less calories through the metabolism, and have little energy to exercise.
You Expend Less Energy Than You Think
Doing some cardio on a treadmill in the morning does not burn as many calories as you might think. If you otherwise just sit in a car, then at a desk, and then go home and lay on a couch, that type of day does not burn a lot of calories. You might need to stand up more, take breaks to walk, use a standing desk, or ride a bike to work in order to have a sufficient amount of calorie burn accomplished for fat loss by the end of the day.
