Myth: Sodium is bad
Sodium is an electrolyte, an essential nutrient that your body needs.
Yes, excessive sodium intake can raise blood pressure, and because of processed foods, many people consume low sodium.
But would the same advice of “reduce sodium” be wise to tell someone who is trying to lose weight, and already cutting out most processed foods?
The average person consumes so much processed food, that if you take out the processed foods from their diet their sodium intake will be 20 times less!
This means if you are going to the gym, exercising outdoors, and it is the summer time, or you live in a warm country, and you are cooking real food at home, you are putting yourself at a huge risk of a deficiency in this electrolyte.
If you eat real food and are active, especially if you sweat a lot, you need to add a lot of salt to your food.
So if you are experiencing headaches, fatigue, or feeling unwell, it might be that you are not consuming enough sodium.
I cannot stand that some companies, like FitLine, suggest their customers to go on a no salt diet. “Take out an essential nutrient for your diet to be healthy.” Not very good advice.
Remember to use enough sodium in your diet.
